MUGEN Group B “Extreme R” Parts for the FL5 Civic Type R
MUGEN’s Group B parts lineup for the FL5 Civic Type R has been developed under the bold concept of “Extreme R” a philosophy focused squarely on extracting maximum performance on the circuit. Every component has been engineered through detailed aerodynamic analysis, careful material selection, and relentless quality evaluation. The result is a comprehensive package that delivers a total weight reduction of approximately 38 kg while generating nearly three times the downforce of the standard vehicle. As development progresses, completed components will be released sequentially.
Aerodynamics
Front
At the front, MUGEN introduces a carbon fiber front bumper lower spoiler designed to significantly reduce weight while maximizing aerodynamic efficiency. Purpose-built brake ducts, radiator ducts, and a dedicated underpanel work together to improve cooling performance and airflow management. Also available are a carbon fiber aero bonnet and carbon fiber front aero fenders.
The aero bonnet features optimized duct placement to enhance heat dissipation while using airflow from the front grille to generate downforce. The front aero fenders replace the factory units entirely with lightweight carbon fiber construction, reducing mass while improving airflow. Their width and angle are precisely matched to the bonnet’s air outlets, creating a cohesive and functional design.
Side
Carbon fiber side spoilers further reduce weight while contributing to overall downforce. When paired with the front lower spoiler and rear diffuser, they create a unified aerodynamic profile and a distinctly race-inspired side view.
Rear
At the rear, a large carbon fiber diffuser has been developed using extensive aerodynamic analysis. Its shape optimizes airflow from underneath the vehicle, increasing downforce, while an opening at the top of the diffuser allows trapped air inside the rear bumper to escape rearward reducing drag at the same time. Completing the rear aerodynamic package are a carbon fiber rear wing and carbon fiber tailgate spoiler.
The rear wing features a wide profile with a Gurney-flap-style trailing edge, designed to balance the increased front downforce generated by the front spoiler. The wing is adjustable, allowing downforce to be tuned for different driving conditions. The tailgate spoiler adopts a ducktail shape that minimizes air resistance while making a meaningful contribution to rear downforce. When combined, the front spoiler, rear wing, and tailgate spoiler are engineered to achieve an ideal front-to-rear aerodynamic balance.
Performance Parts
Exhaust
MUGEN also offers a newly developed sports titanium exhaust system. Custom front pipes with an increased diameter improve mid-range torque, while the use of titanium for the main system and stainless steel for the front pipes delivers significant weight savings. With a single center finisher design, the system achieves an approximate 8.75 kg reduction compared to the factory exhaust.
Braking
A high-performance braking system has been developed specifically for international circuit use. Through repeated testing under extreme conditions where rotor temperatures approach 900°C the system delivers exceptional stopping power along with a more rigid and confidence-inspiring brake feel. Finishing Touches Rounding out the Group.B lineup are a carbon engine cover and carbon chamber cover, bringing the “Extreme R” philosophy into the engine bay.
The engine cover features a bold MUGEN metal logo, while the chamber cover showcases the iconic MUGEN tricolor, subtle but unmistakable expressions of MUGEN’s racing heritage.
